Reflections I did a bunch of arrangements for the wedding of one of my best friends, Jason Venesky. As a tuba player, he wanted a tuba solo to be included and - after a time - we settled on this piece, Deep River. It seemed an ideal vehicle to show off the lyrical qualities of the tuba - and, in particular, the sweet upper register of the instrument. It really worked and I subsequently transcribed the tune for the brass band medium, as well as a version with piano. I enjoy the drama of the tune, and especially the "ascension" that happens at the end.
